How do I set project tolerances?

We wrote the planning book because we saw so many organisations struggling with the quality of their planning. Schedule problems normally happen because of a lack of preparation in the early stages of the project rather than issues with the schedule itself.

We hope that these extracts will help to give you some ideas on how to improve the way things are being done in your organisation.

Establishing project controls

Once all the excitement of designing and getting the show on the road has subsided, you are now faced with keeping the project heading in the right direction and under control.

Depending on what controls you have planned to put into place, establishing them will require focus. At the start of the project there will be energy to move into delivery and start to create things and as a consequence there will be plenty of parallel activity, which will need to be controlled.

If this is a challenge you are faced with, why not have a longer look into our FAQ on how to establish effective project controls

Setting project tolerances

Rod Sowden in full flow

Setting tolerance in a project is a dark art for sure. If you allow too much tolerance the project can run out of control, if you allow too little, the project team will have no autonomy and you will be breathing down their neck all the time.

The concept of tolerance is used in the context of contingency. Tolerance is the acceptable deviation between what is estimated and what is actually delivered.

There are three major overlapping areas of control in a project

  • The time the project takes
  • The resources (cost) used by the project
  • The quality of what the project produces

If this is an area that you are interested in, hopefully our FAQ on how to set project controls will be helpful

PRINCE2 Quality

The value of the content of some of the best practice guides can often be lost in the detail of the manual and the focus on passing an exam. Therefore, we have pulled out some of the areas that we think will be of the most value to people so that they can act as a quick reference guide.

We have created a large range of these references that we hope will be useful to you, please stay in touch and let us know what you think.

What are project milestones?

The word ‘milestone’ is used extensively but often means different things to different people. In the project management world people happily use the term all the time, but we need to remember that a milestone will mean different things to different teams within a project. One thing we can probably agree on is that they come at the end of some activity and they have zero duration because they symbolize an achievement, a point of time in a project.

Here we use milestone for a task of zero duration that shows an important achievement in a project (it may be an event for celebration. Milestones are a way of knowing how the project is advancing if you are not familiar with the tasks being executed.

If you are involved in setting some milestones or trying to resolve a problem relating to them, our FAQ on setting project milestones may come in useful, we certainly hope so.
