PRINCE2®

PRINCE2® is an acronym for “Projects IN a Controlled Environment”, the 2 stands for the second edition, though it is now so well established it is hard to imagine the owners of the trade mark moving to Prince3. The framework is owned by the UK Office of Government Commerce and is now universally accepted as a highly effective framework for delivering projects

When implementing PRINCE2® it is critical to remember that it is only a framework, not a panacea, the supporting qualification prove you understand the framework, they do not mean you can deliver a project, a very popular misunderstanding – there is much more to project management than using a framework.

PRINCE2® is a method for managing projects. It helps you work out who should be involved and what they will be responsible for. It gives you a set of processes to work through and explains what information you should be gathering along the way. But PRINCE2® doesn't do the work for you, it cannot guarantee that your projects will be successful. Good projects, which deliver quality results, on-time and within budget are dependent on the quality of people involved from Project Board down to individual team members.

PRINCE2® require projects to have:

  • An organised and controlled start, i.e. organise and plan things properly before leaping in.
  • An organised and controlled middle, i.e. when the project has started, make sure it continues to be organised and controlled.
  • An organised and controlled end, i.e. when you've got what you want and the project has finished, tidy up the loose ends .

In order to describe what a project should do when, PRINCE2® has a series of processes which cover all the activities needed on a project from starting up to closing down.

The PRINCE2® Framework has 3 elements

Components – these are the controls and disciplines that are needed to deliver a project effectively, namely:

The components are active throughout a project, and help ensure that the project stays on the right track.

Techniques are the tools that help projects deliver the requires

  • Product Based Planning – a techniques that ensure the project focuses on it's outputs rather than activities to achieve them
  • Quality reviews – the activities to ensure that the project delivers fit for purpose outputs as specified

Processes - define the lifecycle a project goes through and the control points within it that ensure that it doesn't run out of control, namely;

Running in parrallel with these processes are two more Directing a Programme where the Executive maintains control and Planning , where continual review and updating occurs
