MSP07 Examination changes

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

Not only is the MSP manual growing and improving, so are the examinations.

A recent decision by the examination board to confirm the new levels of examinations will enable consistency across the portfolio of qualification in OGC Best Practice

Foundation level examination will remain the same

The current Intermediate examination is being realigned to be compatible with the PRINCE2 practitioner, and will take the form of a complex multi choice, it will now have the title of MSP Practitioner

The there will be a new Advanced Practitioner, which will be an open book, written paper based on a new complex case study. It is likely to be the subject of an additional course.

We believe this is a victory for common sense, anyone that has done the MSP Practitioner in 5 days will know that it is a really tough course, with as much focus on exam technique as there is on learning the tools and techniques of programme management. With more and more training companies coming into this market, the price has dropped, which in turn has driven down quality. Hopefully this will deal with that problem and help to raise the standard.

For those who currently hold the MSP Practitioner qualification, there will be upgrade path available.

The challenges of being a Programme Director

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

We came across this joke recently, for any readers who are in one of these roles I’m sure you will appreciate it.

A Programme Director in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a man below. He descended a bit more and shouted,

“Excuse me, can you help me? I promised my Programme Sponsor I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am.”

The man below replied, “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground.

You’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude.”

“You must be in Programme Management,” said the man above in the balloon.”

I am,” replied the man below, I am a Programme Manager, “How did you know?”

“Well,” answered the Prog. Director, “everything you told me is technically correct, but I’ve no idea what to make of your information and the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip.”

The Prog. Manager below responded, “You must be in Programme Direction.” I am,” replied the man in the balloon, I am a Programme Director, “but how did you know?”

“Well,” said the Prog. Manager below, “you don’t know where you are or where you’re going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow, it’s now my fault.”
